The editor-in-chief oversees the editorial process, beginning with the assignment of the associate editor to a submission.
Associate editors usually manage the review of submissions and the editing of those that are accepted.
Depending on the journal's policies, however, an associate editor initially assigned to a submission by the editor-in-chief may be asked only to see it through the review stage, after which, if the submission is accepted, the editor-in-chief takes over (in the role of associate editor).
The managing editor copyedits a submission, modifies the layout of a submission, and conducts a final proofreading of the submission in its proof formats prepared for publication.
Guide for the Editor-in-Chief
Submissions: All submissions to the journal are to be found in one of the four queues on the "Submissions" page, depending on what stage they are at in the editorial process. The editor-in-chief has access to all of the journal's submissions through this page, while associate editors have access only to those submissions to which they have been assigned.
Submission Management: Before assigning an associate editor to manage the review of the submission, the editor-in-chief should click on the submission's file name to open the file and ensure that the text appears to be suitable for review by the journal. If the submission is obviously not appropriate for the journal, the editor-in-chief may email the author and indicate that it will not be sent out for review. The editor-in-chief can then archive the submission. The assigned associate editor is also on a position to take this action.
Guide for Associate Editors
Submissions: Submissions to the journal that are assigned to an associate editor by the editor-in-chief appear in that associate editor's "In Review" queue. Associate editors have access to only those submissions to which they have been assigned.
Review: An associate editor conducts the peer review for the submission, and enters an editorial decision for the submission on the "Review" page.
Editing: An associate editor oversees the copyediting, layout and proofreading to ensure that the submission moves through the editorial process in a timely fashion.
Guide for the Managing Editor
Submissions: Three different queues list respectively those works which the managing editor has been asked for copyediting, layout modification and proofreading.
Copyediting: The copyediting is divided into three steps. The copyediting is done directly on the submission file, with suggestions to improve the flow of language and communication of meaning, and with changes to ensure the submission adheres to the journal's style and format.
Layout: The managing editor will layout the submission in the appropriate file formats and layout style for the journal. The managing editor will need to use third party-software to prepare the HTML, PDF, Postscript, etc. files (e.g., Dreamweaver, Front Page, Acrobat, etc.). As well, the journal is able to make a set of layout instructions available to the managing editor to assist them in properly formatting the files for publication.
Proofreading: The managing editor needs to work through the one or more formats listed under proof formats in the "Layout" section. At this stage, typographical and formatting errors are identified.
